Demetrius thought it was absolutely endearing that the girl didn't like to insult people. He spent a lot of time around people that were much less like that and it was kind of nice to be around someone that was just genuinely nice. There weren't too many people like that around anymore, that was for sure. "Well, please accept my humblest apologies, than. I'll try not to worry you too much in the future," he chuckled. It was also nice to know that she cared enough about him to worry for his safety, since he certainly cared that much about her. A frown took over his face when she mentioned that she had been insulted bad enough to merit her avoiding doing the same to anyone. If there was anyone that didn't deserve to be treated like that, it was December. "Well, if anyone insults you again, just let me know. I'll take care of it," he commented, completely serious about that. How he would take care of it, he didn't really know, but he would.
Backing off when she assured him that she was quite alright, Demetrius figured he would be okay to let her walk around again. Of course, now that they had already had one mishap, he was going to be extra careful. You never knew when a wild rock would appear, after all. "Well, you know. Maybe not quite that bad, but we wouldn't want to take any chances or anything," he smirked. He was now just joking around again with her, but that wasn't to say that he wouldn't stand right by her side twenty-four hours a day if she asked it of him. If there was anything that December needed from him, it was a pretty safe bet that he would agree to it. Demetrius just really cared about her, more than just for the job. It was so much more than that now.
His offer for her to meet his mother hadn't been intended to unsettle her and make her nervous at all, so Dem kind of felt bad for bringing it up. Maybe she didn't care enough about him to want to meet his family or anything. After all, he was just there as a bodyguard, really. His eyes lit up, however, when she said that she would love to and even more when she said that she loved spending time with him. "Great, yeah, maybe we could ah, do that one day over break. She's always got something good going on in the kitchen, so she'd love to have us drop in one day," he explained with an eager nod. It would be nice to see his mother at least once over the holidays, but he wasn't going to leave December unprotected for a second. Pausing in his conversation to look up at Ember as she started to nervously ask him something, Demetrius gave her a wide and comforting smile. Of course he would hang out with her to help celebrate her birthday. He would absolutely love to do that for her. "Of course, Emmie. Whatever you want to do, just let me know and we'll go do it," he said with a grin. It would be his honor to celebrate her birthday with her, no matter what they did to do so.

Shaking her head a rather bright grin graced Emmie's face despite the rather saddening topic, Its alright Dem, something Papa taught me long ago is kill your enemies with kindness. Eventually, they back, for the most part and when they don't… Then I'll tell you? As much as she touched by Demetrius' caring personality, she did not want to have to become dependent on him over every little incident. It was not that she was too proud, it was more that she was frighten and worried that it would soon become too much for Demetrius, especially considering how Demetrius' current assignment was to protect the entire Swann family.
Laughing softly December responded, My Papa always worries about me and my clumsiness, like when I tried to do ballet when I was little… Oh god it was horrible, I not only sprained my ankle I also managed to knock half of my class down with me. Lucky for me I was able to get out of that class before we did a live show. So yes, you most likely will have to watch over me like a hawk when I'm home. Even when she went out for a walk as a child Emmie would return with a bump, scrap, or bruise which was why November, December's father, worried over Emmie-Marie the most. However with Demetrius around, Ember's father worried less, a lot less to the point he felt very little stress over his little girl which was something Emmie's father often said to December.
Grinning like a little kid in a candy shop filled with free candy Ember said, Okay, whenever you want to go. Haha a kitchen filled with food, that sounds nice. No having to cook for an entire day, that sounds really good. I may love Papa's cooking, but I'm his daughter. Not to say that Papa's cooking is horrible, its just….not exactly the best. Being raised off her father's cooking, Ember at a very young age learned and tried to cook. But when she had to leave for school her father's cooking got much better however to say it was the equivalent of a four star restaurant would be a big fat lie.
While waiting for Demetrius' answer, Emmie felt her stomach churn and felt as though something was stuck in her throat, but the moment he agreed Ember's face instantly brightened. Looking up at Demetrius, December excitedly exclaimed while running over to where he stood and gave him a tight embrace, Thank you! Thank you so much Dem! You're the best! You really are! After a few minutes of hugging Demetrius' tightly she took a step back with a rather broad grin on her face.

Kill them with kindness, definitely not a lesson that Demetrius had ever learned, but one that perhaps he should. He was a nice guy for the most part, but there were times when his temper got the better of him and he could be rather nasty. As far as he knew, December didn't have that problem in the least. "You know, that's a pretty amazing lesson. Impressive that you can actually follow that mantra," Dem said, shaking his head a bit. He couldn't imagine just being nice all the time to everyone, even the people that he wasn't all too fond of. Demetrius had always been raised to fight back and so that was what he did. He became an auror to fight for justice, no matter what the circumstances brought and he had also become an assassin for the Marauder's. It was a cause he believed in and even if it could be violent, he was the kind of guy that would do whatever he needed to do for the cause.
The thought of December attempting ballet was certainly an amusing one. She tripped just walking, so he couldn't imagine her actually dancing or something. That was just a hazard waiting to happen. "Oh, definitely. We're going to have to put ballet on the list of things we should avoid doing," he joked, looking at her with a wide grin. Watching over her wasn't something she had to tell him to do, since he pretty much did so all hours of the day anyways. By now it was just natural for him to keep at least part of his attention focused on December or if she was gone, on the cries coming from Anna's room. Looking after this family had become his entire life in the last year since he had been there and there wasn't really much else that he did anymore. Yet, Demetrius didn't mind it. He was able to do little things that he enjoyed while he was there and even just being there was now something that he enjoyed.
The fact that December didn't mind going to see his family was great for him, since he really did miss them. He was able to pop in sometimes when December was at school just to say hi and run errands, but it had been much longer since he had been able to sit down and have a meal with them. "I'll send her an owl before we head over and let her know she should count in for four more. Ah, if your father and Anna want to come, that is," he nodded. He had just kind of assumed that everyone would go with him, since that made the most sense. He had to look after them all anyways, so it would just be sensible for the whole group to go over to see his family. He wanted his mother to see where he had been and what he was doing anyways. That and it would be nice for his younger siblings to be around as well and they would love to meet everyone as well.
Chuckling as December ran over to him, he opened up his arms to catch her in her embrace, lifting her up and twirling her around once before setting her back down. "Anytime, Emmie. You know I love hanging out with you, right?" he asked with a curious expression. He was happy to let her stand there hugging him for awhile longer, bringing a smile to his face. "So, what should we do to celebrate? Wherever you want to go, we'll go there," he nodded, quite determined to make up for any lack of celebration from her classmates. Demetrius loved to celebrate things and December's birthday certainly was one of the most important things he could think of to celebrate. Besides, it had been awhile since he had done anything particularly exciting, so it was a good day to do just that.

Smiling Emmie commented in a very casual manner, Haha its easy for me, hence me being a Hufflepuff instead of a Ravenclaw. I guess…I've seen a lot of negativity in the world ever since I was little and instead of adding negativity I rather add some positivity. I mean, yes its not much, but its more than what some people do so its better than nothing. Rather than becoming an extremely pessimistic girl December-Marie somehow managed to turn into a hopeful, optimistic girl something that her father always tried to encourage.
Laughing softly Emmie nodded her head in agreement, Balance and grace are not my friends, they've been and are my eternal enemy. Being a rather clumsy girl from a young age December learned to avoid certain things, but for some odd crazy reason her clumsiness never influenced ice skating or roller blading, just her walking, dancing, well every other possible thing which was why ever since she was a little girl she always roller bladed every where and learned how to ice skate. Despite the numerous bruises and scrapes she received from the harsh training that she had to go through, Ember loved it all. Ice skating and roller blading was more than worth it, they also were things her father approved of.
Tilting her head to the left before asking, Why wouldn't Papa want to go? As long as the hospital lets Papa off work and of course Anna's going to come, she hasn't been able to go out much has she? Though it sort of made her sad that it would not just be her going, she knew it was quite obvious the entire family would go. Unless her father was too busy being a Head of a Ward at St. Marks Hospital.
Laughing gleefully Emmie let out a squeal of enjoyment as she felt herself being lifted up from the ground, Haha! Wheee!!! The moment her feet touched the sand again Ember-Marie grinned brightly, Obviously you do or you'd be completely miserable here, after all you haven't had much of a social life thanks to this job. Without much thought December exclaimed excitedly, Ice skating, roller blading, baking, and making sweets! That's how we should celebrate my birthday. Though normally something she would not request, especially since she was clumsy as hell Emmie added on, Ice skating is something I'm actually really good at, that and roller blading. For some reason I never really fall down when I wear skates, wheels or blades. But when I walk…that's a different story.
As she began thinking some more things to do on their little b-lated birthday bash she realized another thing she could do, Oh yeah! Papa is letting me get a puppy, a Norwich Terrier, but can you let me pick a puppy out? She was excited, though she already had two turtles, two jumping mice as pets as well as Apollo, but that was Demi's dog not her's so that really did not count.

It didn't surprise Dem in the least when he had heard that December was a Hufflepuff, since it really just fit her personality. She was smart enough to be a Ravenclaw, certainly, but her entire persona was lined up with the traits typical of the Hufflepuff house and Dem just couldn't have seen her anywhere else. "You're amazing, Emmie. If everyone was even just a little bit like you, I bet this world would have a whole lot less problems," he nodded, genuinely impressed by the girl. Honestly, it seemed like every time he started talking to her, she came up with something new to say that blew him away even more. No matter what she had been through, she was still the absolute most cheerful and forgiving person that he knew and it amazed him to no end. Just living with her taught him so many little lessons and it was an absolute honor as far as he was concerned.
She was certainly right on that point. In the short time that Demetrius had known her, she had fallen down and had all different kinds of close calls. Honestly, it astounded him sometimes just how clumsy December was. He could understand a few times tripping here and there, but December was far and beyond that one. "Well, lucky for you I have conquered the trials and tribulations of balance, so I should be able to protect you from that one. Grace, maybe not, but I'll certainly try my best," he promised with a goofy grin. He was over-exaggerating things a bit, sure, but he was just playing around and making a joke of December's misfortune. It was kind of hard not to play around with her about it, since it was adorably sad how bad it got sometimes. It probably wasn't as bad as he was making it out to seem, but he still felt the need to look after her even more because of it.
It made Dem a lot more confident about taking December to meet his mom to know that the rest of the family would be in tow. It would have been just his luck that the one time he decided to take December out somewhere alone, something terrible happened. Having everyone where he could keep a close eye on them just made him feel safe. "Good, good. Anna comes out with me sometimes, kind of. We go for walks and such, but not anywhere far from the house," he shrugged. He liked to get Anna out, even if just in the yard, so that she didn't completely get attached to the indoors and maybe learned a little bit about sports or nature or something. He had always been outside growing up and he only thought it fair for Anna to have as normal of a childhood as she could.
That too was entirely true. He would have been absolutely miserable if he hadn't come to like Emmie and the others. Being stuck there wasn't easy and not liking the people he was staying with would just have made it utterly unbearable. "Well, it's alright. I never had much of a social life anyways," he chuckled. Not entirely true, since he'd had quite a few friends that he hung out with, but he didn't mind it. His eyes lit up as December started to run through the list of things that she wanted to do for her birthday. That was definitely a full days worth of fun and he was more than willing to go off and do just that with her. "Well, let's do it. We can definitely knock that out today, or at least over the next few days. Will Anna and your father be alright here?" he asked, wanting to be sure before they left anywhere far. He still could see the house from where he was, so he was okay with being there, but leaving elsewhere would mean being out of sight from the house as well.
The rest of their plans, though exciting, didn't quite measure up to the idea of going out to get a puppy. Dem loved animals in general, but he had an absolute soft spot for dogs. Going to pick out a puppy would be an absolute joy and would be tons of fun, for sure. "Can we please? I love going to see puppies," Demetrius commented with a goofy grin. Spending the day hanging out and picking out the most perfect puppy would be the greatest thing ever. "Do you know where you want to go to pick one out? We can head over there like right now," he nodded, quite excited by the whole idea of it.

Shaking her head responded with a small grin, Nah, I'm not all that amazing. I'm just me. But if a lot more people did think of the happier side of everything…the world would be a lot better. Though Ember was a confident girl, she was not arrogant or egotistical. No, instead she saw herself as a rather average girl who had a different personality, one that rarely was seen in the world. But that was the thing that set her apart and that was something she loved about herself.
Laughing Emmie jokingly said, Well, balance is all I request help with. Grace…its something I doubt I'll ever learn. She was certain that she had fallen at least over a thousand times while Demetrius lived with the Swann household, if not more. What was crazy was how quickly Demetrius had been able to help her most of the time and upon this realization Ember commented, I've just realized something, you've managed to help a good chunk of the time… Are you sure you aren't sick of having to save me from myself? December-Marie Serahpim Swann was a walking hazard not only to herself, but to anyone else around her and often her friends would joke about her attaching a warning sign onto her forehead and back.
Being a child that was raised with art and freedom, Emmie always felt guilty and horrible for Anna but upon hearing Anna did in fact go out a rather bright grin appeared on her face, That's great! I'm grateful… I felt horribly guilty about Anna not being able to be outside and seeing the world. Its nice knowing she does get to see the outside world. Thanks Dem, really I'm extremely grateful. It meant Demetrius was trying to provide Annabel with a decent childhood, one that Anna had not been able to see so far in her very young life.
Tilting her head slightly to the left a doubtful expression graced her face as she said, Why do I doubt that you didn't have a social life Dem? Hmm…let me think about this one. Tapping her right index finger against her cheek she teasingly began listing her reasons, Number one, you're too nice and funny not to have friends and friends equal social life. Number two, I'm certain you had a girlfriend because you're not only really kind, but a great guy so there's another person who would of provided a social life. Number three, you're training to be an Auror which means you have co-workers and those co-workers also mean a social life. All this adds up to, Demetrius Harper you are a liiiiaaarrrrr! You had a social life, but you had to give it up for your job. Though it began as a joke towards the end the playful expression turned into apologetic.
Biting her lower lip Ember quickly apologized, I'm sorry about taking you away from your life Dem, but I'll find a way to make it up to you. Promise! Instantly as the apologetic and guilty emotion showed its face it disappeared and was replaced by a sincere one. Shaking her head the guilt and apologies that were jumping around in her brain disappeared and instead were replaced by an ecstatic, excited child-like demeanor, Papa is a grown man and has raised me and October all by himself, basically. I am certain he can handle Anna for a little while, but if you don't want to leave her behind we can take her with us.
With the talk of puppies December's child-like demeanor shined through even more, Yes! I actually do know where I want to go get my puppy. There's a pet store I found that has all sorts of puppies! Its called PetLand, its located in the Jamison Plaza! Biting her lower lip, which was Emmie's attempt to hide the large grin, she began jumping about in the water in a excited manner that looked very much like a little kid in a candy store filled with free candy.

Amazing and modest. How she managed it, Demetrius didn't know. He himself wasn't often the most modest of men and there were more than one occasion where he enjoyed tooting his own horn. Though, around December that was quite toned down, since he almost felt bad about it. For one, he wasn't nearly as good of a person as December and second off, she didn't even give herself credit for her big accomplishments, let alone her little ones. "Well, you are amazing, at least in my humble opinion," he shrugged. He wasn't going to make it into a big argument or anything, but he certainly wasn't going to let her get away with not knowing his opinion on the matter. "Yeah, if only people saw it like that," he said, shaking his head. They wouldn't be in the mess they were in if people just chose to make good decisions that would benefit people and not just themselves all the time. However, that wasn't the way of the world, unfortunately.
To be honest, Dem didn't think it was quite possible to really help December learn balance. The best he could do was be there to catch her when she fell and that was what he intended to do, in every sense of the matter. Chuckling a bit at her question, Demetrius shook his head lightly. He didn't think he could possibly ever get sick of helping December. He had always been the sort of guy that was there for his friends, but this was different, more important. "Not a chance. It gives me a sense of purpose around here," he replied with a chuckle. It was a joking answer, yes, but he meant it. If he wasn't there for December, what would the point be? She needed him and he liked that he was the one there to look after her. As long as she was still in danger from the people that were out for the rest of the family, Demetrius had no intentions of leaving her behind and he absolutely wouldn't get sick of it.
On top of taking care of December, he couldn't imagine leaving Anna either. She needed someone that could be there to help provide something of a normal childhood for her. Though Demetrius didn't think he was all too qualified for the job, he was currently her best shot. "Yeah, just doing what I can to help around here. Don't want her to grow up without anything, so, I try to get her out of the house to experience things," he shrugged. It just seemed like the right thing to do for Dem. Even if he'd never really been around children before, it had been a natural thing for him to take up. At any rate, it was helping prepare him for when he became a father himself and he hoped that his own kids were as precious as little Anna was.
Looking over at December as she started to playfully list off the reasons why he would have a social life, Demetrius couldn't help but give her a sheepish smile. Yeah, he'd left friends, co-workers, and even a girlfriend behind when he had come to Australia with the Swann's for this job, but he had come to absolutely have no regrets. No regrets, just choices. At the end of the day, he would be able to say that he made his own and that was all that mattered. "Okay, yeah. I guess I had a bit of a social life, but it's not that big of a deal. It's not so bad out here with just you guys and the sun and the sand," he shrugged. He didn't want her to feel bad about it at all. He was the one that chose to come take this assignment and it was in no way December's fault. She didn't make him come, but she sure as hell was keeping him there and he didn't mind it one bit.
It killed him to know that December felt bad about his being there for any reason at all. "Hey, no. You already more than made it up, not that there was anything to really make up. It was my choice to come, Emmie. Always was and always will be," he assured her. He didn't know if she would take his words to heart, but he hoped and prayed that she came to see that he wouldn't be there if he didn't want to be. Demetrius was an adventurer at heart and nothing would keep him somewhere for long without good reason. Glad for the change in subject, Demetrius simply nodded his approval. "Yeah, you're right. He's a big boy, so he can handle it for a bit. Let's go just the two of us to pick the pup out. Then we can come back and share with the family and all of us be together to celebrate," Demetrius decided. He was a tad uneasy about leaving them behind, but it wouldn't be for long and there was nothing that had indicated he needed to worry for any reason about an impending attack. He would put up his wards before they left again and that would alert him to anything that might cause a need for his presence at the house.
Taking his wand out of his pocket to cast his wards, it took Demetrius just a few moments of muttering and mumbling to be satisfied. Little sparks and streams flew from his wand and back up to the house, causing a light glow to appear around it, signaling that his work was done. "Right, we should be good to go than. As soon as you're ready we can apparate right there and get you a puppy," he said, grinning wildly at the idea. The edge about leaving the other two behind was gone, as he was confident in the spells he had cast. Of course, he didn't want to be gone for too long, so the sooner they left, the better. He was sure that December would understand that and would feel much the same about the matter.

Almost instantly December's cheeks reddened as she said, Haha…thank you. It was not that it was just a compliment, it was a compliment from Demetrius. But as quickly as the blush came, Ember found herself becoming a lot quieter however that soon changed when she added her opinion, Hopefully that will change. Though she knew had people thought things through and thought of the happier things then her sister might be able and her mother might of never left. But rather than thinking of the past she instead shook her head and distracted herself by jokingly saying, That'll mean you'll have to stick around forever then. Though the tone of voice gave away that it was a joke, deep down Emmie hoped that he would stay.
Smiling brightly December added, I know Anna loves that you do that for her, she may only be one years old, but I think she knows. Ember knew her theory seemed odd, if not crazy, but she strongly believed in what she said because the only time she ever saw Anna cry was the day the Daily Prophet wrote the article. After that Emmie rarely ever saw Anna cry which was surprising to her, not to say that she was shocked Annabel-Lee was her sister's daughter after all and her sister was someone who always was optimistic and her inspiration.
Biting her lower lip the guilty expression slowly faded away but not before she repeatedly apologized, Still… Though it was your choice, I feel horribly guilty. I'll make it up to you, I promise. Somehow, some way I'll make it up to you, I swear. Whenever Ember-Marie made a promise she always kept them or at least tried to and this promise was one she was one she had to try her hardest to keep, especially since he had given up so much. A soft sigh escaped as she shook her head while replying, It may be your choice but I still feel horribly guilty Dem… But as soon as she apologized, she changed the topic into something more cheery.
The ecstatic child-like grin never faded as she excitedly washed the sand away from her feet and walked away from the shore before putting her socks and shoes on again. Though worried for her father and her daughter, she knew that they would be okay, especially since it would be only for a brief amount of time. But what made her feel a bit at ease was the fact that Demetrius was a talented wizard.
After a few minutes of ridding the sand from her hands as well as pants and sweater, December said, I'm ready! A puppy was different from her current pets and though Emmie knew it was more for protection than friendship she could not help but feel excited about finally getting a puppy.

Realistically, Demetrius knew that the odds of the world changing so much that people became genuinely vested in the interest of promoting what benefits everyone, over just what benefits the self were slim, he retained some hope that perhaps people could change. An idealistic world, while far from possible in the current situation, was something to strive for. Demetrius, however, felt that to reach it, you had to step on some toes here and there and hurt some people. He wasn't so naive to believe that it would just come naturally from a change in people's hearts. That was simply asking too much of society. Not wanting to get into any discussions on his ideology and politics, Dem was glad for the change in subject that December brought just a moment later. Forever was a long time, to be sure, but he wasn't sure he would be against such a thing. He was happy where he was, so it certainly couldn't have been terrible to be there for, well, the rest of his life. "Yeah, you bet, Emmie. I'll be around as long as you'll have me," he replied with a solemn nod, obviously not kidding in the slightest about what he said.
Though he didn't think of Anna as stupid, by any means, he wasn't sure that at such a young age she was able to understand much of the happenings around her. Of course, it was a nice thought that perhaps she did, on some level, appreciate the things that he did for her, but Dem didn't know. Though, he wasn't exactly an expert on children, so it wasn't like his opinion could really hold much weight in that regard. "Maybe, maybe. I guess we'll never really know, though," he shrugged. Even if he didn't know what Anna thought about it all, the fact that she generally brightened up even more when he took her out and about definitely made his decision to continue doing so rather easy. Maybe he didn't know a lot about kids, but he at least knew a happy baby when he saw one.
Just seeing how concerned December was about the decision he had made brought a slight frown to his face. He didn't want her to feel indebted to him in any way, since there was nothing she had done that had brought this upon him. It was completely his decision and he was both proud and glad that he had accepted it. "Emmie, please don't feel bad about it. I promise, this is where I want to be and you don't owe me anything for it," he plead, though he had a feeling that no amount of reasoning through the matter would change her mind. He just hoped that she didn't come to feel that she would constantly owe him something for what he was doing, since he really didn't think it necessary. He wanted her to feel comfortable that he was there and not stressed that she was somehow bringing even more debt upon herself because of it.
About the time he had finished checking his wards to ensure the safety of the other two Swann's, both Emmie and Dem were ready to apparate over to the store and start searching for the perfect puppy. Demetrius had done it once before, for his own dog Apollo, and it had been fun then, so he imagined it would be even more exciting with December there as well. She was a ball of cheer already and when surrounded by puppies, everyone was at least ten times more excited and happy. The little things just had that effect on people. Reaching over for Emmie's hand, Demetrius clasped it in his own for a moment before apparating them both to the location that she had indicated. Reappearing a moment later, they were a bit off from the shopping plaza so as not to attract any attention from muggles that might have seen their reappearance. "Here we are than," he announced with a grin as he started to walk over towards the puppy store.

Tilting her head she jokingly asked, Really? Even if it means forever Dem? Though it sounded great, she never wanted to be a nuisance and that was something she feared greatly, especially when it came to her closer friends who now consisted of only Demetrius, her Father, and Annabel. But that was because she had to give up her friendships in France to prevent being found. It was rather upsetting to have to leave them all behind, but now she had new friends and December hoped, with all her might that she'd be able to keep them.
Laughing softly Emmie shrugged but as soon as she shrugged instead of commenting. But the moment she felt guilt, Ember kept quiet and instead began playing with her hair. However after hearing, though it did not really make her feel any less guilty, Demetrius' pleading voice she sighed and replied, I'll try not to feel guilty… She intended on trying her best to return the favor, despite Demetrius being paid to do it, and if it meant by doing it through the little things, so be it.
But the moment the Demetrius finished checking his wards, Ember forgot all about her guilt and instead felt rather excited. Giggling like a little school girl, Emmie relaxed herself as they apparated over to the shopping plaza. Though it took them a few minutes to reach the actual store, Ember's excited, gleeful grin never disappeared. However rather than being a patient, calm, and lady-like about getting a puppy, Ember excitedly ran and entered the store. As she saw various breeds more squeals of joy escaped December as she began searching for her norwich terrier puppy.

Forever was a long time. The year that he had been there with the Swann family had been a long time, even, but forever was obviously a whole lot longer. However, Demetrius didn't foresee himself getting over the novelty of the situation and even if he did settle into it, he didn't imagine himself growing bored of it. He enjoyed it, perhaps even more than his busy life from before. "Even if, Emmie. I can't imagine a better place to be than right here with you," he replied with a soft smile. With his skills and determination, Demetrius could have been in any number of places with his life. Yet, despite all of that, he couldn't imagine going back to his old life. The comparison between now and then for him was astounding, really. He felt like he had become a completely different person and that he had changed far for the better.
Knowing that it was an utter impossibility that December would lie to him, he was comforted bu the fact that she would at least try not to feel bad that he was there with her. "I suppose that's all I can ask from you," he nodded, giving her another smile. It pretty much just made him feel bad that she was so guilty feeling about it and he wished that there was something more he could do to show her that he really was happier there. Of course, that wasn't so easy a task, so he would likely just continue to attempt doing little things as often as he could to express just how glad he was to have made the decision to be there. The more that he could make her see that, the better he would feel about things. He hated having her feel guilty and didn't want her to feel bad about anything ever, especially when he was involved.
As Emmie started off at a run towards the store, Demetrius grinned and followed after her, being sure to stay close enough that he could catch her if she fell or protect her from anything else that might happen. The store they entered into was more or less an explosion of cute. There were puppies everywhere, running about in their pens and little kids with their families looking about trying to decide on which dog they wanted. It just brought a huge smile to Dem's face and he couldn't wait to find the one that they would be bringing home with them. "Alright, than. Which one is ours?" he asked, looking over at December with an eager expression. It was about time they had another dog in the house to help liven things up and it would be good for Anna to grow up with the puppy, definitely. That was a special bond and Demetrius really did think every kid deserved to have a puppy in their life.

An excited, child-like grin appeared on Emmie's face as she found herself surrounded by families and kids squealing over the cute little things each puppy did. Biting her lower lip, she turned back over to Demetrius before saying, I can't choose! They all are adorable! But the moment she said that she noticed a little black and brown puppy who was rather hyper which could be seen with the puppy's jumping and excited barks. Walking over to the puppy's cage, she poked her finger through allowing the puppy to sniff her.
After a few seconds of sniffing the puppy began licking and biting the finger. Rather than removing her finger from the cage a giggle escaped as she commented, Well aren't you just a little cutie! Looking over to the tag she turned her head, finger still being licked and nibbled on by the puppy, she said ecstatically, This is the puppy I want! It did not matter that she did not really get to see more of the other puppies, the cuteness and friendliness that the puppy before her had made him the perfect one for her.
Not wanting to leave the puppy but knowing that she needed to go get a worker a small frown appeared. Sighing softly she gently stroked the puppy, with one finger, before saying, I shall return cutie. Straightening herself she turned around with a large grin while saying, Now all I need is someone to help me. Looking about the store Emmie continued to giggle excitedly until she noticed someone near the cashier with a name-tag. Walking rather quickly, due to her excitement, she exclaimed, Hi! I'm December-Marie and there's a puppy I would like to purchase, I already know which one, the cute, hyper seven week old little black and brown terrier up front.
As the two began conversing about the various items being needed they headed back over to the cage. Though excited she began chewing on her lower lip before she commented, I wonder if Papa knew that getting a puppy would be this expensive. Well, at least Apollo won't be lonely, right Dem? Emmie was well aware that her father probably researched what would be needed, but as she began noticing the pricing and felt a twinge of worry.

Watching Emmie look around excitedly at both the puppies and the families that were looking to adopt them definitely warmed Demetrius' heart. This was the kind of atmosphere that he wished they could all live in all the time, not the atmosphere of constant worry at the back of his mind. He didn't know if the rest of them felt it like he did, but there was never a moment where he didn't consider the possibility that something might happen. From the conversations that he had with Emmie's father, he seemed to have that same haunting feeling at times. Demetrius just hoped that the girls didn't feel it at all and that just his presence there was enough to soothe their nerves to the point where they didn't think about it at all. The more normal a life that they could lead, the better Demetrius would feel about the job that he was doing.
Chuckling as she expressed her inability to choose one of the many dogs around the store, Demetrius had to concede that she had a point. The dogs were all pretty adorable and any one of them probably would have made a fine companion for the girl. However, when she bent down to one of the cages, Demetrius could see quite the bond forming between Emmie and the small pup. "He looks like he'll fit in perfect," Demetrius agreed, noting the excitement that the dog had as well. The small puppy rather reminded him a bit of December herself, excitable, joyous, and consistently seeming to have a smile on her face. Of course, dogs couldn't technically smile, but the whole demeanor of the dog, in his opinion, equated to what human's considered a smile.
When December moved to go find a worker in the store, Demetrius stood back near the cage to guard the pup. There probably wasn't much of a reason for it, but it was part of his nature as an auror to look after things that his charge considered her own. Now that she had laid claim to the puppy in her own way, Demetrius felt just as determined to protect it as he did the rest of the family. Be it from harm or just from another perusing family, the small dog now had Demetrius there as a guard. A few people passed by, looking curiously at the small dog, but the position that Demetrius had taken up prevented them from getting close enough to really interact with the dog and they simply moved on to look at the next selection of puppies. Demetrius didn't feel bad in the least about it, since he was more than glad to reserve the dog until Emmie was back to claim it with one of the workers.
As he stood there, his eyes continually scanned the area for any threats, a habit that he had come to pick up from the wizarding world. It was unlikely they would chance upon any dark wizards where they were, but Demetrius was constantly vigilant. His face brightened back up when Emmie and the store worker came back towards the cage and he gave her a slight shrug. "I'm sure your father worked everything out. Plus, I've got a ton of extra stuff from Apollo, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. I bet this tyke is going to keep Apollo in shape even more," he nodded, grinning at the thought of his own dog getting chased around by the smaller pup. Apollo wasn't exactly old, but he was getting up there in years and it would be good for him to have the puppy around to keep him active.
