And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul. To be completely honest, the fact that Talan had been in an arranged marriage more or less since birth had never bothered him. For Talan, that was just a part of being in the upper reaches of society and he was more than willing to accept it. He wasn't, however, willing to accept the fact that his betrothed was an absolute disgrace to the good name that she came with. Viktoria Krum was, without a doubt in his mind, a terrible match for himself. He actually valued his roots and stuck by them, but she had thrown all that aside and aligned with the Marauders. Not to mention, she wasn't a Slytherin. While he wasn't against the other houses, necessarily, he was much more partial to those from his own house. They were just the good people and Talan firmly believed that he would have been much better off with one of them. He didn't have a choice though and he would be stuck with her, one way or another.
In an effort to get the two of them to come to terms with the fact that they one day would be married, their parents had set up a monthly get together for them. It was easily the one day of the month that Talan had come to dread each time it rolled around. He had to act like he cared and listen to whatever she had to say and it always either ended in an argument or an awkward silence. Not exactly something Talan looked forwards to, well, ever. At the very least, Talan knew how to do what was necessary of him to exist and thrive in the fast-paced world that surrounded people of their caliber. He went on the dates, he played as nice as he could and he reported back to his father that things were going as well as could be expected of two people that were thrown together with little say of their own. It had never occurred to Talan to do otherwise and even if he wasn't pleased by the idea, he was willing to go through with it.
Ever the classy one, Talan made sure that when they went out on their scheduled days, it was somewhere nice. Though he couldn't claim he cared about her, he wasn't about to take his future wife anywhere less than the best of places. Preferring to stay in town, Talan picked the most classy place in the town, Alinia. He had made reservations, confirmed them a few times and generally taken care of all the little details that went into planning an evening out. All that was left was to take care of his own appearance. There was never a moment where Talan didn't take the time to ensure that he looked his absolute best when he was going out, even if it was simply for a meeting with Viktoria. There was no saying who they might run into out there at Alinia, so he didn't want to look like a pile of rags if someone important were to be there.
Standing in front of the mirror, Talan tugged at the tie he was wearing once more, adjusting it so that it was just so. Pulling his coat on over it, Talan smoothed it out, buttoning it just enough to give him a very dignified and regal look. Most people his age wore their school robes, jeans, that sort of thing, but Talan wore power suits. In fact, the occasions where he wasn't dressed up in at least a nice tucked in shirt and slacks were so rare that he looked completely and utterly out of his element. With one last look at himself in the mirror and a quick ruffle of his hair, Talan determined that he was suitable looking enough to leave from the Slytherin dormitories and head over to Hogsmeade. Planning on just meeting Viktoria at the restaurant, Talan left from the castle for the short walk over, stopping once he had arrived outside his destination. Folding his arms across his body, Talan stood out of the door to wait for Viktoria.

this was the time of the month that viktoria always hated, and i'm not talking about mother nature. forced upon date that talan and vik had to go on. vik's father thought that if they saw enough of each other and got to know each other then they would end up falling in love and giving him grandchildren. viktoria knows that he's a father and doesn't exactly know everything their is to know about his daughters and what types of guys vik likes but that doesn't mean that he's not stupid enough to realize that the two will never like each other. did he actually think that they would have a child without liking the other? vik forcefully went on the date to make her father proud of her. the one thing that she wanted from him was to know that he was proud of her. he was of course proud that she was taking after him being a seeker for her house, but she would never feel like her was proud of her enough.
viktoria dressed in a black dress with a lace-ish pattern that her step mother had sent her. her step mother, not to be confused with her mother. her mother had been killed by a vampire and her step mother was someone who was still alive and one person that viktoria didn't like all that much. she thought that she could replace her mother, but she couldn't, nobody ever could. she wasn't even very nice to begin with, her step mother. she was one of the people who wanted vik to marry someone like talan; pureblood, slytherin. vik slipped on her simple black flats on put on her ring that had been her mothers. she never let anyone touch it; afraid that it would break by just a touch. she hardly ever took it off and the only times she did was during quidditch or during class, and when she did take if off she locked it in a box with a protection charm on it so that nobody could take it. vik knew that nobody would take it; the ring was old yet valuable.
viktoria flipped her hair and brushed it aside with her fingers. she knew that if her mother were still alive then she wouldn't be marrying talan in a few years. her mother was someone who believed in love at first sight and only marrying someone that you truly care about, not someone that you were forced to marry. her mother married her father because of love, not forced marriage. viktoria looked at herself in the mirror and decided that she looked good enough to be going on a date that she was forced to go on. she flattened her dress one last time which came up to her mid-knee. vik left the ravenclaw dormitories and headed to hogsmeade to meet talan.
on her way to hogsmeade viktoria got checked out quite a few times. it didn't change her mood, if they checked her out then they checked her out, she really didn't care either way. vik skipped half the way to alinia and half walked. half of the way their she was in a good mood, then the other half she realized that she was going to suffer through this date and just decided to walk. eventually she got to alinia, she wasn't late or early, right on time. vik was always right on time or a minute late, never really early or really late. when talan came into view she noticed that his arms were crossed, he didn't want to be on this date either. talan, she said once she was close enough to him. he looked nice, of course talan always looked nice.

And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul. As per usual, Talan was slightly early to their meeting. He was the kind of guy that showed up to things at least ten minutes early and never, ever late. However, he knew that Viktoria wasn't quite on the same page with that habit. She would show up right as eight o'clock rolled around, or perhaps slightly later than that if she was really not in the mood to have their meeting. Of course, he rather doubted that either of them ever actually looked forward to the time they were forced to spend together. Honestly, there were times where Talan would rather just not bother with getting to know Viktoria and then just get the wedding over and done with when the time came for it to happen. After all, no amount of meetings so far had really warmed them up to each other, so he quite doubted that it would ever happen.
Glancing quickly at the watch around his wrist, Talan saw that it was about time for Viktoria to show up. Retaining his clearly very disinterested stance, he looked over towards the castle expectantly. Just on time, Talan saw Viktoria coming his way, definitely not looking too excited about the whole evening. Really, he couldn't blame her. "Right, thanks," he replied with a curt nod. Of course he looked nice. There was rarely a time where Talan didn't look significantly better than nice. Sure, it was supposed to be a simple compliment, most likely suggested by her parents, but Talan couldn't help but feel the urge to roll his eyes at the whole thing. However, he knew that he had to attempt to play nice for both of their sakes. The evening was already bad enough without their having to deal with any sour moods between the two of them.
Uncrossing his arms and letting them drop to his sides, Talan supposed it was best that they just get into the restaurant and get their meal so that they could get in and out as quickly as possible. The less time that they spent together, the less likely it was that there was any potential for disaster. "Well, we have reservations, so we should get going," he nodded, leaving the conversation at that. He probably should have returned some sort of compliment, but there would be plenty of time for such things later. At the moment, Talan was much more concerned with making this whole evening as painless as he possibly could. Not that he had outstanding hopes for that, but perhaps things would be different this time around. Yeah, and maybe the world would simply cease to exist in the morning.
Letting out a slight huff as he turned towards the restaurant, Talan assumed that Viktoria would be following in his direction as they walked in. Much like himself, she wasn't the type to cross her parents and so she too had come to deal with their monthly outings, even if she was just as displeased with it as he was. "We've a table for two under Warrington," he said at the door when asked about reservations. The waiter bumbled through a list of names, quickly locating their seats. "Perfect, yes, right this way sir," the man said, turning to lead them back to their private table. Talan followed in suit, briefly waiting to be sure Viktoria was there. "Am I safe to assume that you've no other plans for us this evening?" he questioned, looking over at her with a raised eyebrow. There were the odd times where their parents sprung some other plans on the two of them, so Talan wanted to be sure that there was none of that to be had for the evening.

viktoria would sometimes come late to the meetings just because she really didn't wanna go. running a bit late was her way of saying that she really didn't wanna go. she pushed it off as far as she could but in the end she had to go no matter what. she would be disappointing her father in that way and she hated disappointing. the thing that she really didn't wanna do was disappoint him. her father was pretty much her best friend and the only person she was extremely close to. sure, vik and nik were pretty close and they had a bond but nothing like vik and her father. they both missed her father dearly and he never really got over her. she was one of the only people who he loved dearly and who he had fallen in love with.
viktoria came right on time, she wanted to get this whole meeting/date thing over with as soon as possible. they would eat and talk a bit and maybe even attempt at acting like they cared about what the other person is saying. "right, thanks." vik nodded, it was worth a try. her step-mother had suggested her to make a comment about something so they could feel more comfortable around each other. it didn't work at all, she just felt more awkward just standing there. he didn't return the compliment, she shrugged. at least she had tried.
"well, we have reservations, so we should get going," viktoria nodded and followed him. she wanted to get this meeting over with and head over to quidditch practice and then possibly honeyduke's for an extra shift and then to the library so that she can study. anybody who knew vik knew that she was either playing quidditch or studying. she was a workaholic and a studyholic. she was an overachiever and did everything that she could to keep herself busy. she loved working at honeydukes, she loved anything sweet so working there was perfect for her, plus she was always sneaking any sort of candy into her pockets when nobody was working.
viktoria followed the waiter as he brought talan and herself to the private table. vik liked the private table, nobody would be able to see her with talan. she never spoke highly of talan so it would be a bit weird for someone to see herself with him. they would probably think that they were secretly dating... the thought disgusted her. she couldn't even think about marrying him, nonetheless dating him. "am I safe to assume that you've no other plans for us this evening?" viktoria nodded yet again. "yeah, although they're planning our wedding as we speak." the last time vik had seen her step-mom and father was before she came to hogwarts and even on the way to the train station they had been planning her wedding with talan. the whole time she was disgusted and completely ignored them both.

And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul. As Talan had expected, the feelings between them were awkward. Of course, it wasn't like he was helping things in the least, since he was doing absolutely nothing to lessen the tension between the two of them. Honestly, he wasn't sure there was much either of them could do to loosen up and just somehow enjoy each others company. If they weren't set to be married, there was absolutely no way that Talan would ever have bothered to even talk to Viktoria, most likely. They weren't the same people and as far as Talan could see, they had absolutely nothing in common. However, he wasn't going to do anything about it. If their parents saw it fit that they were going to be married, than that was that. Either he would grow to tolerate her and live somewhat happily, or he wouldn't and he would just consume himself with his work instead. Either way, Talan would do what was expected of him, even if it wasn't what made him happy.
Seating himself at the table, Talan was absolutely pleased with the location of it. The table was back far enough that, for the most part, there would be no wandering eyes catching a glimpse of his "date" with Viktoria. Until they came out and expressly told people of their arranged marriage, Talan would prefer to have absolutely no connection to her as far as everyone else could tell. It wasn't like she would be a terrible person to be associated with, since her family background made her a suitable friend, but she was with the Marauder's and that just wasn't going to work out. At the moment, he was too heavily involved with the Death Squadron to have any ties to the other side tarnishing his reputation. Of course, that would only last until he was out of school, at which point all side affiliations would have to be dropped in an effort to pursue a career where everyone could look to him as a potential leader. If he were too strongly to either side, his chances of becoming the Minister of Magic would have decreased far too much.
Talan's facial expression pulled into a tight grimace at her comment. Of course the wedding was already being planned. Honestly, Talan didn't think it would happen for quite a few years, but than again, their parents were determined it was going to work out. "Hm. I don't think they should be the one's to plan it. I suppose if it has to be done, than I'd rather it be the wedding you want," he said, leaning forward into the table as he spoke. That was probably one of the few times he had expressed any sort of interest in making things between them work out in more than just a political sense. He wasn't exactly a bad guy, he was just difficult to get to warm up to anyone and thereby rather difficult to get along with in any way. He wasn't the type of guy to really have friends or anything, so it was something that he had to work at if he wanted to be suitable for any kind of relationship. Even if it was an arranged one.
Though he already knew exactly what he wanted, since he rarely changed his order at the restaurant, Talan busied himself by flipping through the menu. At least that helped lessen the awkward tension between them, since it gave him a legitimate reason not to be talking. Glancing up after a moment, Talan saw that the waiter was on his way over to get their orders. "Order what you'd like, of course. My treat, as usual," he nodded, though he was sure he didn't have to tell her this. It was just customary for him to pick up the tab when they went out each month. Letting Viktoria be the first to order, Talan leaned back to a more comfortable position and adjusted his tie slightly as he waited.

if only they had at least one thing in common then maybe they could get along, at least for the short time when they were on the date. but they had nothing at all in common; he didn't like quidditch like how she did and she wasn't at all involved with the death pack like he was. she didn't even know anything about him. if you're marrying someone then you should at least know a few things about them, like their favorite color or favorite food, anything really. she was going to suck it up and become a housewife or play for the bulgarian quidditch team. her step-mother wouldn't like it, she would probably want me to become a housewife...
viktoria sat down across the table from talan. she flattened her dress after she sat down. she didn't want to ruin the wonderful dress that was handmade for her. being a krum viktoria has had many things given to her and made for her, she's always had very expensive clothes, they've always been able to have more than enough. viktoria couldn't talk to someone who wasn't well off and say that she understood them because she didn't at all. the only thing she's ever known is living in the krum manor in bulgaria. she would like to know what it's like to not be given everything but then again she doesn't because it would be too weird for her.
hm. i don't think they should be the one's to plan it. i suppose if it has to be done, than i'd rather it be the wedding you want. that was probably the nicest thing about the wedding that she's ever heard him say. she smiled a little, for a split second and then it vanished. she nodded and tucked some of her hair behind her ear. she was going to get through this "date" and hopefully she would come out alive. she was over exaggerating about the whole date, she always did. yeah, uh i guess it could be sorta fun... the only thing that she was looking forward to was the party afterwards. vik was a bit of a party girl, she loved parties and having fun and everybody aside from her father and stepmother knew it. she ran her hand through her really long hair. vik didn't even remember the last time she had actually gotten a real haircut, not a trim, a haircut. it was a bit weird, her hair was really long, almost to her waist.
vik looked at the menu, she already knew what she wanted. they had gone to alinia so many times that she had the menu memorized from front to back. the food wasn't all that great but it was one of the only really nice places to eat at hogsmeade. of course vik would've loved for him to just take her to a place that actually had real people food, not gross looking food that barley had anything on the plate. "order what you'd like, of course. my treat, as usual," viktoria nodded, she didn't have to be told twice. he always payed for the lunch or dinner. right... she watched as the waiter came to the table to get their orders. i'll have the swordfish. she wished that at least for once that they would go to a real people restaurant but she knew that both of their parents would kill them for it.

And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul.
Talan wasn't quite sure if the hint of a smile that Viktoria showed made him feel slightly better, or if it simply put him further on edge. As far as he could remember, there definitely hadn't been a time when either of them had showed even the slightest positive emotion on any of their "dates" and so he was rather apt to think that it just made it infinitely more awkward. Not to mention, fun had never been the word that Talan would use to describe any wedding in which he was marrying Viktoria Krum. He knew, however, that he really didn't have much of a choice in the matter and he at least wanted to try and make it bearable for the two of them. Admittedly, he had been failing at that pretty badly, but that was just because he really had no idea how to even begin getting along with Viktoria. Though, she seemed partial to the idea of her planning the wedding, so maybe that was a good place to start.
Bringing a hand up to his neck, Talan rubbed at it anxiously for a moment, not sure what else to say after that. It was that awkwardness that made it so difficult to go out with Viktoria. They just didn't have enough commonalities to make it feel normal between them and Talan absolutely loathed it. Sure, he felt awkward around plenty of people, but this was a forced meeting and that was what made it the worst. Had he been doing this of his own accord, perhaps he would have been able to make a better effort towards making things work, but that just wasn't a possibility at the time. "Right, uh, fun. I'll let my father know that we'll be handling the planning from here on out," Talan nodded. He doubted his father would be pleased with the idea, but perhaps it would just seem as if the two of them were really starting to get along in their parents eyes and it would be a good move for them. At the very least, if they saw that the two of them were putting in extra effort, they might ease up slightly on everything.
Letting Vik order first, Talan gazed down at the menu with the failing hope that perhaps they might have changed it to add something at least somewhat edible. Though Talan was raised in a family where meals like this weren't uncommon, he hated it. He hated all the fancy preparation and honestly, it made him just want a big burger or something normal for once. Of course, his parents would have his head if he even tried to take her somewhere less fancy, so they were forced to one of the few "classy" restaurants in the town. "Ah, I suppose I'll have the same," he muttered, waving the waiter away once their orders were taken. He never knew whether the waiters actually worked there or if they were some sort of hired help from their parents set there to spy on the two of them and see how they were doing. It was for that reason that Talan generally made an effort to keep the waiters as far away as possible and as busy as he could possibly make them. Sure, he came off as a demanding asshole because of it, but it kept them from having to worry about a bad report back to their parents.
Their orders placed, there wasn't much else to distract them while they were sitting there, waiting for their food to arrive. That part of the "date" was always the most awkward. When they were eating, they had the food to keep them busy and when they were ordering they had the menus. The time in between, however, they had nothing. It was just the two of them, a long wait, and whatever failed conversation they could come up with. It was that time when Talan always just wanted to come out and admit that he wanted to work on finding a way out of this all, but of course that wasn't possible. He had no idea if Viktoria would take something like that back to their parents, so he refrained from saying anything to that effect. "So, ah, how is Quidditch going?" he asked, deciding that if he had to make a conversation, this would be the best place to start with her.
