I won’t waste the time or the breath on you,
To explain things you think you already knew[/right]
The past month had been one big blur for the youngest Cauldwell, and she felt like she couldn’t control it from just whizzing right by her. After she was rescued from the cellar by Peyton, Thayne, and Roxanne, Hallie was immediately admitted to St. Mungo’s hospital. Honestly though, after Thayne carried Hallie to safety, the brunette couldn’t remember much. The only thing she could recall before completely blacking out was Peyton saying Hang in there Hallie. The next time she woke up to a white room and blinding white light, Hallie heard her father arguing with the nurses. Apparently, she was too bruised up to be healed by magic, and would have to heal naturally, the muggle way. This wasn’t good enough for her father, so he took her out of that hospital, and put her into one of the best [and most expensive] wizarding hospitals, but even they said the same thing. So Hallie had to endure the struggles of being in pain while her mother tried her best to comfort her, and her father hired the best detectives to find who did this to his ‘precious daughter’. In all honesty, Hallie just wanted to be left alone, to reflect upon what had happened to her, but more specifically why.
The first week and a half, Hallie was confined to bed by her nanny and mother, so she wouldn’t further bruise her ribs. She found it incredibly boring, especially since her parents refused to get her another iPhone until she healed, but she did get to spend quality time with her mother. Typically, Hallie never saw her family, as her parents were either on some vacation, or her father was in some other country conducting business, and her mother tagged along to go shopping. So to spend time with her mum was a rarity that the girl actually enjoyed. Even her father came in a couple of times to check up on the girl, which was quite unheard of. Hallie’s father wasn’t much for kids, quite the reason why the Cauldwell sisters had a nanny growing up. In the moments that Hallie wasn’t showered with affection, the girl spent a lot of time thinking about the others who were involved in the kidnapping. She tried to send an owl to Shiloh and Gabby, but the bird came back with no response. Hallie knew this was all her fault, but she hoped that the others didn’t blame her. She honestly wouldn’t be able to take that type of guilt.
When her parents gave her the okay to come off of bed rest, Hallie immediately rushed to the beach on the other side of the mountains. She couldn’t take another minute inside her house, because while it was true she absolutely loved the castle, it was beginning to suffocate the girl; especially since she was always one for the outdoors. Passing through the narrow opening between the mountain peaks, Hallie ran down to the water’s edge, jumping back at the coolness of the water. The light March breeze danced over her shoulders, as she sat down in the sand. Simply hearing the waves crash upon the shore washed Hallie over in a calm feeling. She released the flood of thoughts that she had blocked since that night, remembering especially how much she wanted to give up. If Peyton, Thayne, and Roxanne didn’t bust in at the exact moment they did, Hallie wasn’t entire sure how much longer she would have survived. But Hallie was here now, and so she would continue to build a wall around the memories from that night.
For the remaining time that Hallie spent at home, she took to capturing the essence of the mountains surrounding her house. If there was one thing that made the girl happy, it was definitely spending her spare time in the painting room across from her bedroom. The French doors leading out to a balcony offered an excellent view of the Corbett Hills, as well as the North Sea on the horizon. She especially loved how the sunrise shined through the peaks of the mountain, and Hallie often got up at the crack of dawn just to get the painting. There was something about dipping her paintbrush in colors and stroking out an image on canvas that calmed Hallie. She hadn’t picked up a paintbrush since the end of the summer though, after her father told her painting was a waste and she should focus on academic. Perhaps that was the reason things had gone so wrong for Hallie this year. Painting was her only way to release pent up anger and frustration. Regardless, she made a personal vow to paint at least once a week, in various locations around Hogwarts.
Hallie knew that she would eventually have to go back to Hogwarts, but the girl didn’t want to. She quite enjoyed spending time in her castle, especially down at the beach. It wasn’t that Hallie didn’t want to go back to the schoolwork, cheer squad, and stress, but she just didn’t want to be the talk of the school. She didn’t want anyone to ask her about that night. In simple terms, Hallie didn’t want to remember the reason why she left in the first place. Over the past month, she had to go back to the hospital several times, as checkups, and Hallie asked if they could remove the small DS scar on her right wrist. Unfortunately, all the magic in the world couldn’t get it off, so Hallie had a constant reminder of that night, that the torture was real. When her parents dropped her off at the school, Hallie took one deep breath, and walked up to the Ravenclaw tower to reclaim her bed. Thankfully, no one was over dramatic that she had returned, but Hallie couldn’t find Shiloh or Gabby, not that she wanted to face them at the moment.
To be honest, the first night back at Hogwarts was the hardest for the girl. She didn’t know if it was being back in this environment, or if it was the fact that she saw Gabby right before drifting off to sleep, but Hallie had horrible nightmares about the kidnap. She had nightmares after first coming home, screaming to the point that her parents would come rushing into her room, attempting to quiet the girl. But over the days, Hallie had learned to build a wall, and the nightmares came less frequently over the month. However, back in her bed in the Ravenclaw dormitory, the dreams became vivid, almost as if she was still in the cellar. Waking up trembling, Hallie couldn’t fall back to sleep in fear that she would dream about the torture. Instead, she got out of bed, and retrieved her painting gear from the truck in front of her bed, and travelled down to the fourth floor.
Everyone knew about the mirror of Erised if they came to Hogwarts. You had to be stupid if you didn’t. Hallie had personally visited the mirror a couple of times, but she had always been too afraid to look into it; she didn’t want to know what she desired just yet. Admittedly though, she absolutely loved the phrased inscribed around the mirror’s frame—Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi. Tonight however, she wanted the capture the essence of her true desire. Taking the time to set up her easel and color palate, Hallie finally took a deep breath and looked into the mirror. She at first only saw her reflection, which she took careful note of. Hallie immediately began the work on her portrait, noticing for the first time how she really looked. With each careful stroke, the brunette became more aware of her features; the frown etched into her mouth, the dullness of her blue-grey eyes, the deep purple bags under them.
She was so busy with her work, that she almost didn’t see the second Hallie in the mirror. When she finally did realize, Hallie jumped in surprised, then inched forward towards the mirror. While her own reflection moved closer to the mirror, the second Hallie stayed where she was, only moving her hand in a wave. Hallie looked over the girl in the mirror, and realized the girl was smiling. But there was no frown in the corner of her mouth, and the light was present in her crystal clear, blue eyes. Hallie moved her hands up to the mirror, and delicately placed her fingertips on the pane, watching the happy Hallie do the same thing. Feeling her fingertips tingle, Hallie gave her happy reflection a confused look. I don’t get it, what’s my desire? With her other hand, the happy Hallie pointed at her smile, and the girl finally understood. Her desire was to be happy.
Dropping her hand and dropping to the floor, Hallie pulled her knees up to her chest. Up until this point, Hallie had lived a life of disappointment. Not a I got a bad grade and now my father’s going to kill me type, but a disappointment of herself and her regrets. She felt like she always had to prove something to those around her, but when was Hallie going to accept that she was just Hallie, and she couldn’t be anything more than that. Glancing up, Hallie noticed that it was just her reflection once again. She jumped up, and settled behind her easel, in hopes of catching what she just experienced, the two girls touching through the glass, one representing what Hallie was at the moment, and one of what Hallie wished to be. She was so engrossed in trying to get the details right and thinking about what it all meant, that the youngest Cauldwell didn’t hear the door open behind her.
