It wasn't uncommon to find Thayne sitting in the corner of the commons room on a random Friday night, doing some sort of school work or simply just reading. Going out, while he did go at times, wasn't something Thayne found himself doing all that often. It wasn't that he didn't like people or that he didn't like going out, it was just that he was happy enough to just sit around and do his own thing. Not bothered by being alone, Thayne didn't often make the effort to go out and make plans with people. If he was invited, he typically would agree and show up for at least a little while, but that didn't happen often enough to really throw him off his schedule of peaceful reading. That night, for example, Thayne had more or less been left alone and he found himself with a book and a mug of hot chocolate by the fire.
As it was a Friday night, the commons room was fairly barren. There were a few people scattered about playing games of Wizard's chess, but other than that it was mostly just Thayne seated over in the corner. His feet were propped up on the chair across from him and he was snuggled down into the chair he was seated in. The room was quiet, with only the crackle of the fire and the sliding sound of the pages as he flipped through the novel. It wasn't the most exciting Friday night, that was for sure, but it was certainly a very Thayne thing to spend his time doing. He was at least quite comfortable there where he was and particularly pleased that insofar no one had come to pull him away from the story at hand. However, he knew it was simply foolish to think it would last for long.

I just can’t sleep tonight Knowing that things ain’t right When the weekend finally came along after a long week of school, Ryder either feared for her life or became extremely overwhelmed with joy. Typically her father demanded that Ryder came home for the weekend, so he could ‘keep an eye on her’, but there were those rare occasions where she was allowed to stay at Hogwarts and just relax. Like this weekend, Aiden was off attending some jury trial for the Ministry, thus letting Ryder to just lounge around and do nothing all weekend. While it was certainly true that Ryder couldn’t wait to get out of this old and dusty castle, she definitely preferred it any day over going home. At school, she knew that she didn’t have to be quiet, and she definitely didn’t have to watch her every move, living in fear that her actions would set her father off in an outrage. Worry and tension definitely were common motifs whenever Ryder was required to go home.
Her classmates didn’t normally stick around on a Friday night, usually finding some club or party to attend, which it made it easier for Ryder to slip out for her after meals ritual. Going to Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom always made Ryder anxious, because she didn’t want word of her illness to get back to Aiden. It was only a matter of time though, a thought that crossed her mind many times as she made her way back to the Slytherin common room. Too early to go to bed just yet, not that the insomniac would have been able to, Ryder decided it would be best to get a jump start on her homework. She claimed that she didn’t care about her school work, but Ryder knew what the consequences would equate to if she came home with bad marks and test scores. Honestly, with all the studying that she did, Ryder should’ve been placed in the Ravenclaw house. Looking around, the girl spotted Thayne set up at a table near the fire. She didn’t have a problem with the quiet boy, and actually liked him. She felt like he was one of those people she could truly count on, regardless of the situation. Hey Thayne, do you mind if I sit here to? Ryder placed her bag on the floor, and plopped down in an overstuffed chair. It was nice to take a load off every once in a while.

As per his expectations, it didn't take long before another set of footsteps started down the stairway and into the commons room. Though not particularly interested in knowing who it was, Thayne's attention quickly flicked over towards the stairwell to see who it was. At least if it was someone that he knew would find some reason to drag him out of his small corner, he would have a few moments to finish off to reasonable stopping point in the book. Catching sight of the person, Thayne was rather surprised to see that it was Ryder. From what he knew, she wasn't really around the castle that often on weekends. It seemed like she was coming over towards his direction, so he turned back to his book for a moment to fold down the corner and mark his spot for when he next had a chance to read.
As she came over to sit down, Thayne gave Ryder a polite smile and a nod. He wasn't sure if she had the intention to stay for any length of time, but he put his book to the side either way. Even if he wasn't outgoing, he was incredibly polite when it came to interacting with other people, especially when he didn't know him all that well. "Of course not. You're welcome to sit wherever you'd like," he commented. Moving his feet off of the other chair in front of him, Thayne readjusted himself so he wasn't taking up nearly as much room. Honestly, he wasn't sure if he was expected to continue with some sort of conversation, so he simply sat back and waited. If Ryder wanted to talk, than that was fine, but if she was busy than he would be free to go back to his book.

I just can’t sleep tonight Knowing that things ain’t right Ryder curled her legs under her, while pulling books out of her bag, in an effort to focus on her studies. While it was true that she was quite focused on her academics, Ryder sometimes lacked the motivation to start it, therefore taking her a few minutes before she actually got started. She glanced around the room, listening to the chatter of those around her. For the girl, Ryder was perfectly content with just staying in on a Friday night, chilling with her homework near the fire. She looked back over at her companion, and noticed a book off to the side. Ohmygosh, I’m sorry for interrupting you. That was rude of me. As much as she tried to portray this badass, don’t give a shit attitude, Ryder did genuinely care. She couldn’t stomach being as cruel to other people as her father was to her.
Not wanting to keep Thanye from his reading, Ryder quickly jumped into her Astronomy essay on some random theory of Jupiter’s moons. While she could pretty much beast out a well written essay in a matter of hours, Ryder sometimes became stuck, especially if she wasn’t particularly fond of the topic. Much was the case with this essay, and after her introduction, which was filled with cross-outs and the such, Ryder just didn’t know what else to say. It was one of those things where what she had to say in three feet of parchment paper could easily be said in two sentences. Using the tip of her quill, Ryder traced an outline on her lips, something she often did when thinking, before giving up all together. Looking up, she gave Thayne a polite smile. So tell me about the book you’re currently reading. Listening to Thayne had to be better than an Astronomy essay.

To be honest, Thayne really wasn't all that bothered by the disturbance, so he didn't see her apologies as all too necessary. Sure, he was reading and such, but there was always time to read later and he didn't mind being distracted now and then. However, Ryder seemed to have her own work to attend to, so he didn't want to keep her from it by continuing the conversation too much. Giving her a brief nod as she sat down, Thanyne waited for a moment as she took to working before engaging himself once more in the novel at hand. Flipping another page over as he finished it out, Thayne was quite pleased by his progress so far with the story. It was a good read, for sure, so he was glad that he had opted to pick it up. His eyes flicked up to Ryder when she spoke again, taking a moment to register that she was talking to him, once again. Clearly, the school work wasn't nearly as interesting as what he was reading. "Ah, it's just a story I picked up from the library. About a young wizard stuck living in a world full of muggles. Pretty good read," he explained, setting his book back down so as not to seem impolite.

I just can’t sleep tonight Knowing that things ain’t right Out of the corner of her eye, Ryder watched Thayne peacefully turn page after page. She honestly didn’t know the boy too well, but she gathered from their interactions, he was a pretty nice guy. It was people like Thayne that made Ryder realize not everyone was as cruel and disgusting as her father. Honestly, talking to Thayne was a nice change for what Ryder typically experienced. She inched her head closer to him, quite intrigued by the plot of the novel he was reading. Oh wow, that sounds nice. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book for pleasure. She nodded her head, still thinking about the story plot. Wouldn’t it be nice, living in the muggle world without having to worry about living through some war, and not having the expectation of your Wizard family? Ryder was sure the life of a muggle wasn’t easy, especially since they couldn’t just whisk up clean laundry, but it had to have some advantages. She turned her attention back to the guy sitting across from her. So how are you? Ryder wasn’t exactly an expert at small talk.

It was pretty obvious that Ryder was infinitely more interested in what he was reading, which he didn't mind all that much. He could definitely understand how someone could get easily bored with some of their coursework, so he didn't really have a problem giving her a bit of a distraction. "Yeah, it's a good read, for sure. You're welcome to borrow it when I've finished if you have the time," he offered, figuring it was a nice gesture. It seemed like she was fairly busy for the most part, but there was always a chance to read as far as Thayne was concerned. Clearing his throat a bit at her next question, Thayne sat back in his chair for a moment before responding. "Ah, I'm doing fine, thank you. How about yourself?" he asked, glancing over at her as he spoke. It was much more preferable to talk about Ryder than about himself.

I just can’t sleep tonight Knowing that things ain’t right The girl smiled at Thayne, a twinkle sparking in her eyes, as he offered to lend her the book when he was finished. It was little acts of kindness like such that absolutely warmed Ryder on the inside. Thanks Thayne, that’s really nice of you. Maybe I’ll take you up on that. She reached for her discarded quill, scribbling a random sentence that just popped into her mind. From the looks of it, this essay was going to take a while. When Thayne asked how Ryder was doing, she slowly looked back up at him. When she noticed he was looking at her, she subconsciously tugged her shirt sleeves down, ensuring they covered her wrists. Oh you know. I’m doing quite well, thank you. I have a feeling this weekend is going to be quite nice, just relaxing under the oak tree near the Black Lake. What about you? Do you have any major plans for this weekend? She smiled warmly at the boy.

Although Thayne didn't see his actions as being that big of a deal, it seemed to have quite an effect on Ryder. Though he wasn't the prying type, Thayne often wondered what was going on with Ryder. She was a strange person to try and capture and honestly, he didn't know much about who she was or what her home life was like. He did, at least, have a feeling that it wasn't a very easy on on her. "Of course, of course. Just let me know when you want it and it's yours," he nodded, looking over at her with a soft smile. Ryder's plans pretty much mirrored his own. A calm weekend with not much to do was a staple in Thayne's life. Well, granted that was only possible when Sage wasn't dragging him somewhere. "Ah, no. Much of the same. Figured I'd take the free time to catch up on reading and such. Nothing too spectacular," he shrugged. It wasn't all that exciting, but it was fine by Thayne.

I just can’t sleep tonight Knowing that things ain’t right Ryder stared anxiously at the essay in front of her, suddenly worried that every action taken by her might be under the scrutiny of Thayne. She knew he wasn’t the snooping type, just a nice quiet guy who kept to himself, and yet she couldn’t help but feel exposed to him. Exposed to anyone really. Like her secrets and home life were just dying to come out. Ryder often wished that she could find someone to confide in, someone to offer her advice, and quite truthfully, Thayne would probably be the best person to talk to. But she most certainly didn’t want to burden him, or anyone else for that matter, with her petty problems, and Ryder would much rather just bottle up her issues. Because the more she could keep them a secret, the more Ryder could deny that she even had issues to begin with. Don’t you ever get bored of just having quiet time? Don’t you just want to yell and scream and do something adventurous? The words slipped out of Ryder’s mouth before she really knew what she was saying, and she hoped Thayne didn’t take offense to it. Regardless of his answer, Ryder could relate. At home, she was expected to be seen and not heard, and therefore rarely spoke a word. She was only a loud rebellious child at school, and honestly it was the only way she could release some of her pent up frustration.

Pausing for a moment, Thayne thought honestly about what she said, but the answer was still no. He wasn't the type to express his emotions with outward shows of aggression or rebellion, but with more subtle manners. The very fact that he was a part of the Marauders was a testament to Thayne's more rebellious side. His family was firmly in with the Death Squadron, so for him to have gone against that at all was a big step and clearly showed that, in his own manner, he was just as much of a rebel as some of the more recognized students around the school. "I suppose not. I'm content enough with the way my life is going that I've not really had that urge," Thayne replied. Moving a hand to his chin in a thoughtful manner, Thayne couldn't help but wonder what had brought the question up from the younger girl. "I suppose you feel differently?" he asked, posing as nonthreatening of a question as was possible.

I just can’t sleep tonight Knowing that things ain’t right Ryder looked down at her folded arms, tracing the thin lines covered by her sleeves. She considered what he said, actually happy at his response. For some odd reason, Ryder wouldn’t have been able to handle it if Thayne said anything differently. Perhaps it was because if he said something different, than Ryder wouldn’t believe that people could be true to themselves. The thing she desired the most was hope that people could actually be true. Ryder looked at the painting of Salazar Slytherin on the wall next to her. This was her moment to unleash everything the girl was feeling. This was perhaps the only chance she was going to get to really explain how she was feeling. No…I… She paused, unable to form the words. I guess it just depends on the person. She shrugged, as she looked back at him. Ryder just couldn’t bring herself to face the reality of her situation. I don’t think you’d be the type to really go crazy. Me on the other hand, well, when you’re stuck in this dusty castle, things might go wrong. She giggled lightly.

For whatever reason, such a simple conversation seemed to be weighing quite a lot on Ryder's mind. Much like the past few conversations he'd had with the girl, Thayne got the impression that there was something more going on with her. It was something he had always wanted to look into a bit more, but something that he certainly never would. He might as a few questions of other people, but he had a feeling that he wouldn't get very far. Ryder wasn't the type to disclose much of her personal life though, he felt. "Hm, quite true. I suppose it's a good thing I get out once in awhile, even if I just leave to Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley. Do you ever go anywhere interesting?" he shrugged, giving her another warm smile. He was hoping that he could at least make her more comfortable around him, even if she didn't feel comfortable overall.

I just can’t sleep tonight Knowing that things ain’t right The girl shifted slightly in her chair, uneasy that Thayne was being so nice, especially when she was so cryptic. He could very easily tell her to go away, as she was rudely interrupting his quiet time. She nodded her head, quite excited all of a sudden. Oh yes, getting out is fun! I’ve been in love with Hogsmeade since I first got to go. She thought back to her first trip, taking everything in awe. I quite liked the atmosphere over there, which is why I’m working at Honeyduke’s. Well that, and I love candy. She smiled at his question, nodding her head in response. Mhm! Once I went with my mom on a trip to Italy. Ohmygosh, you think Rome is beautiful in pictures? That’s nothing compared to the real deal. She beamed at the memory. Realizing that she was rambling all about herself, Ryder nodded her head towards Thayne. What about you? Have you had any fabulous adventures you’d like to share? She grinned, quite interested in how he’d reply.
