Quiet and peaceful. It seemed as though Danika’s roommates did not seem to know those words. Even while they were studying, the room seemed to be filled with noise of paper turning, frantic scribbles, (some not so quiet) whispers. Now the blonde had nothing against noise and people talking, but sometimes, just sometimes she felt as though she would explode from too much noise. But it was expected from her. After all, she was all whispers and silence, rarely speaking unless she was spoken to or when she just simply couldn’t contain herself from keeping quiet, which didn’t happen very often. Everyone always said that the reason why she didn’t talk so much was because she was shy, but she wasn’t. In fact, Danika was probably one of the most outgoing person ever. It was just that she never found an opportunity to talk. When one came from a family like hers, you learned to speak only when spoken to and keep opinions to herself or else there were punishments, severe punishments. So the girl learned to keep quite just to pass through life unscathed.
After a few more muffled whispers and giggles, the Slytherin just couldn’t take it anymore. She needed to be somewhere quiet and serene. Somewhere that wasn’t her dorm room. Danika grabbed her books and papers, stood up, and quickly excused herself. She exited the room and just started wandering around in the girl’s common room, looking to see if any of her friends were also studying. Normally the girl wouldn’t mind just barging into one of their rooms and just plop down on their bed and start studying, but today she just felt the need to be with someone who was studying. Or at least somewhat quiet, which her friends rarely were. A few more minutes of wandering and poking her head into dorm rooms, she gave up and exited the common room and made her way to the library. Quickly she set her things down on a table, but being the bookworm that she was, she couldn’t help looking for books to read. It didn’t take too long for Danika to find enough books to last her a whole week, and slowly walked back to her table. But there were simply too many books in her arms and a trip over someone’s feet was all it took to send the girl toppling down with the books falling with her. “Sorry!” she said quickly as she picked up the books on the floor.

If Addy didn't have a serious reason as to why she needed to leave the room, she wouldn't. Going out among people made her extremely jittery and she hated that feeling of utter helplessness. It wasn't that she was afraid of people, since many of them were actually quite friendly, but she was definitely afraid of what might happen if she started talking to them. She knew that her parents had people watching her, studying her every move and each time she talked to someone they didn't approve of, it came back to haunt her. Maybe not that day or that moment, but eventually it would. They never let something go, no matter how long in the past it was, and Addy was afraid of them. She was well and truly afraid of her parents and the consequences of every action that she took.
Unfortunately for Addy, there were times that she absolutely couldn't avoid going out. That afternoon, for instance, she had to go make a trip to the library to find a few books for a research paper. She was hoping that she would be able to get in, get the books, and quickly escape, but that wasn't the case. As she was searching through the racks, she felt someone stumble into her and fall over, causing her to jump back with a rather loud yelp of surprise. "Y-...it's...oh, Danika!" Addy stuttered out, stopping her nervous jabber when she saw who it was. Danika was one of the few people that she had warmed up to over the years and generally she was far less nervous around her. "Do you uh, do you need some help?" Addy asked, offering the girl a hand to help her up from where she was on the ground.

Danika Selwyn was known for being a poised and elegant girl. She didn’t trip over people’s feet and fall. To say that the blonde was just a bit embarrassed would be a great understatement. Elegance came to her as easily as breathing, so things like this didn’t happen often. In fact, she had only fallen four times in her whole life, an accomplishment that she was quite proud of. The first time was when she first started walking. Her father was not there to catch her. The second time was when she first started ballet. She had fallen down during a particularly complicated performance and twisted her ankle. The third time was during her first dance at her first pureblood function. Safe to say, she was as embarrassed as she was now, though probably more so then than now. But she does not dwell on those memories and instead chose to continue gathering up her books.
When she hears it is Addy that she bumped into, it only makes her feel worse. She liked the girl. She was quite and eerily similar to Danika in a lot of ways and their families knew of each other and supported their friendship. She gave her a grateful smile when the girl offered her a hand. She grabbed it and stood up. “Thank you,” she said the smile still present on her face. “How are you?” Danika asked a second later. She wasn’t sure why she bothered with pleasantries anymore when it came to the brunette, but it was habit that she could not seem to break. She shifted the books on her arm when one of her arms was feeling a little sore under the weight of her books.

Giving Danika a small smile as she helped the girl up, Addy quickly brought her hand back to her side. Though she was more comfortable around Danika than the majority of the people she knew, that comfort didn't extend to physical contact. That was quite possibly a fear that she would never get over. "Oh, yeah, of course. Don't worry about it," Addy said with a simple shrug. It was the most coherent sentence that she'd spoken in probably the last few weeks and quite a feat that she didn't stutter and stumble through it. The only reason that she felt any slight comfort with being around Danika was because her parents had openly approved their friendship. Danika was from the same sort of family as her parents, making her a suitable candidate as a friend for Addy, as far as her parents were concerned. Fortunately, Addy had come to generally like her more than the rest of her parents choices.
Danika's question brought a slight shrug to her shoulders. Addy never really changed how she was feeling and in general, it was always just okay. At least, as far as anyone else needed to know. "Fine, like usual," she nodded. She wouldn't say that she was fine in reality, she never really was, but that was always the same answer. The less people knew about her home life and the problems that she had, the better. "How ah, how have you been?" she asked the other girl, tilting her head to the side as she spoke. It had been awhile since she'd last seen Danika, so she imagined there would be something or other to talk about and catch up on from her life.

It didn’t surprise Danika anymore how Addy’s answer to question was always the same, though it never stopped her from worrying about her. Sometimes she wondered whether she really was doing fine, but she never questioned it or asked. It just simply wasn’t how she was raised. Though, there was always a time where she wondered where their friendship would be if she did ask questions. Would it be better or worse? Thankfully, or not, she would never know because she would never try to try to say anything to question her. “That’s good to hear,” she said, giving the girl a slight smile. It was good to hear and her usual answer brought a sense of calmness to the blonde. “I’ve been doing quite well,” she said, deciding not to mention the fact that her father was currently ill and it worried her quite a lot. There was no need for her to know, and Danika had a suspicion that she was find out soon from her parents.
Word seemed to travel faster than normal around old pureblood families and nearly everyone knew what was going on with each others lives. There was no such thing as secrecy when it came to families that were all interconnected in some way. “Why are you in here?” Looking for books to read for fun?” Danika asked curiously. She rarely saw Addy around anymore, with the girl’s preference of staying in her dorm room and only leaving unless she absolutely needed to. Sometimes she had the urge to march up to the brunette's common room and drag her out to get some fresh air and sunshine, but even if she wanted to, she couldn't. It was impolite and slightly rude and the blonde was never that.

The thing that Addy really appreciated about Danika was that she didn't push things. If Addy said she was fine, than she accepted it and moved on, even if it was usually pretty obvious that Addy was anything but fine. There was a lot that went on in the girl's life that she was afraid to talk about, so she tried to move past it, but a lot of people were pushy and liked to delve into why she was the was that she was. Danika never did, though, and Addy appreciated it. "That's good. Always good to hear," Addy responded with a nod, giving Danika the same respect that she received. No matter what problems might have been plaguing the two of them, they didn't talk about. They were aware that the problems were there, but they didn't do anything else about it. It was just that and somehow, it worked for Addy.
Shaking her head a bit, Addy held up the book she had in her hand. "It's for a research project. Uhm, I was just going to grab it and head back to uh, to my room," Addy shrugged. It wasn't like there was any other place she would have been, considering she didn't leave her room at all. It was just easier that way to avoid getting herself into more trouble than going out was worth. "What about you?" Addy asked, looking over at the absurdly large stack of books that Danika had with her. It was probably just books to read for fun, but Addy couldn't be sure.

One would expect that she would bore of pleasantries by now, but surprisingly she was not. Danika’s whole life was built on those polite remarks, among other things and without them she felt strange. It was off-putting to say the least and the blonde would much rather make her way through life relatively normal. She nodded when Addy replied, though there was a small, almost unnoticeable frown on her face. “Oh. I’m stopping you from doing that aren’t I? I’m sorry,” she said. She was always sorry, even when it came to things that were out of her control. It was normal for her to apologize though. It was also normal for her to think that almost everything that needed an apology was somehow her fault. To tell the truth though, Danika didn’t really want the girl to leave. She wanted to catch up with her, ask about how school was doing and whether she had ever left her room other than when it was necessary. She would only ask about things that were unimportant and tedious, things that would not matter.
“Oh, these are just for fun. I originally came here to study since some of my housemates don’t seem to understand what the word quiet means,” a flicker of annoyance crossed her face, though it was quickly replaced with a smile, “I got sidetracked though and couldn’t help myself.” A sheepish smile was on her face, like she was caught in the act of doing something bad. In some ways though, she was. “What’s your project on?” Danika asked with a slight tilt of her head. While projects were not her favorite – they were too long and tedious – she learned to live with it, and maybe she could help her, though Addy was a Ravenclaw, so she saw no reason why she would need help. But Danika was Danika, and she was too helpful for her own good.

Though it was technically true that Danika was keeping her from her project, Addy wasn't exactly against it. As much as she loved her studies most of the time, it was nice to have a break from it. Back up in her room, it wasn't like she got much of a break from it, unless Dani was up there high on something and she had to drag the girl back down to the Hospital Wing or something. However, AJ usually took care of that in her own way, so Addy was left to her own devices. "Oh, don't worry about it. It's uhm, not due for two weeks," Addy said with a shrug. She had a lot of time to get around to her project, so she would get to it when she got to it. Besides, it was nice to have some time to just actually talk to someone and not worry about what her parents would have to say about it. Danika was approved and though their conversations mostly consisted of the pleasantries and perhaps a few extra things between them, it was better than nothing.
"You're always welcome to come uh, to the Ravenclaw dorm. It's...a lot quieter, unless Dani is around," Addy offered, smiling slightly over at Danika. Most of the time her room was quiet enough to actually get work done in, so she didn't mind offering the space to Danika if she needed it. What are you ready?" Addy asked, glancing curiously at the stack of books that Danika had. She read quite a bit herself, so it was always interesting to see what kinds of things other people read about in their spare time. "Oh, I have to write an research essay on some aspect about a famous rebellion of my choice," Addy answered. Honestly, it was something that she was really quite fascinated by and she was happy to be writing the paper. If she could, she wanted to do something like that in the future, analyzing history.

“Thank you for the offer! I think I’ll take you up on that sometime soon,” she exclaimed with a smile. She had no doubt that she was going to end up in the Ravenclaw common room someday. The blonde knew for a fact that her dorm mates would probably end up gossiping the next time they decided to study with her. Honestly, she should’ve known better than that by now. Offering to help them study would only cause her a headache and a lot of frustration. Sometimes Danika found it hard to put up with people, but she dealt with it the only way she knew; by ignoring it and pretending like she didn’t have a problem with it. Sure it was a bit unhealthy, but she would argue that her whole lifestyle was unhealthy. Addy’s question brought a smile to her face. “Oh, I’m just reading some philosophy and fiction books. George Orwell’s works are incredibly fascinating, though it’s not exactly something mother and father would allow me to read.” Once she finished talking, she quickly realized that she was talking to Addy and not just some random person. “Promise you won’t tell them?” she asked, with a hopeful smile on her face.
Danika nodded when the brunette told her what her project was about. Rebellion certainly was an interesting subject for her. She couldn’t even begin to count the number of times she wished she had stood up to her parents and rebel against them and their wishes. Sure, she would most likely end up as a disgrace to the pureblood community and her family would cut off all ties with her, but the blonde just couldn’t help but wonder just how much happier she would be. For now though, it was simply too risky to do something of the sorts and Danika simply did not know what to do if that happened. Perhaps when she left school and had the opportunity to work and earn money she would make her move. “That’s interesting. Have you chosen a rebellion to write about yet?” she asked curiously. For once in her life, she was lying about her interest in the subject that they were currently talking about.

Though Addy wouldn't push Danika to come visit in the Ravenclaw commons, she certainly wouldn't have minded the company. It was rare that Addy had someone that was both approved by her parents and someone that she was generally happy to hang out with."Great, yeah, I'm uh, always there, so," Addy shrugged. There was a very good chance that no matter what hour of the day Danika wanted to come by, Addy would be there and happy to have company. Her dorm mates, for the most part, weren't people that she was all too fond of, so any reason to have other people around was a reason Addy was happy to accept. Addy hadn't personally read the books that Danika mentioned, though her interest was definitely piqued by the idea of it. Of course, Danika was right in the fact that their parents would much prefer them reading other things. "Oh, I...no. I don't...talk about you with them or...yeah," Addy quickly said, shaking her head. She knew how rough home life could be when she did things her parents weren't too keen on, so there was no way she would go around talking about Danika's activities when her parents were very similar.
Running a hand through her hair for a moment, Addy shook her head at Danika's question. There were so many different choices for which part of history she could cover, so she hadn't quite made her decision yet. "I was going to read through a few things and pick one out today before I start really researching it," Addy added, biting at her lip. Addy could spend her entire day reading about such things, so she didn't mind it at all. If anything, it would be the most interesting thing that she'd done all day. Though, considering she hadn't done a whole lot of anything outside of her classes, it wasn't much of an accomplishment. "Err, so...did you hear about that uh, ball thing that we're supposed to go to?" Addy asked, assuming Danika's parents would probably make her attend much of the same stuff that her own made her go to. Addy wasn't looking forward to it at all, especially since she was expected to go with someone as a date.

If she was someone else, Danika would’ve been offended or at least a little hurt by Addy’s statement, but she wasn’t. It was just simply how things were and she herself never told her parents about her friend more than she needed to. While the brunette never did anything wrong or something that could be considered out of line by her parents, she didn’t want to risk the chance of saying something that could potentially put their friendship at stake. They simply just wouldn’t want their daughter being friends with someone who could possibly damage their reputation. Danika hated it, but she couldn’t do anything. She was their puppet.
She nodded at what Addy had said. The Slytherin had never been incredibly interested in history and she didn’t feel the need to learn more of it than the curriculum required seeing how her parents didn’t see it has an important thing to know. When she mentioned something about a ball, Danika was surprised but her face betrayed nothing. A ball? Her mother didn’t tell her anything about a ball. “Um… I didn’t actually,” she admitted, almost in an apologetic way. “I’m sure they will soon though. They’ve been a bit occupied recently, but I’m sure I going to go.” Her parents just wouldn’t allow her to miss any social event. Rumors would start and that would ruin their image and everything they had worked for.

Though Addy was a bit surprised that Danika hadn't yet heard about the upcoming ball that they were both likely to be forced to, she supposed her parents just hadn't gotten around to telling her about it yet. There was always something new to worry about attending, so it was easy to forget about something every so often. "Oh, yeah, uhm, it's some sort of benefit for...I don't remember," she confirmed with a slight nod. Honestly, Addy never really knew what the purpose of all of the events was, simply attending them at her parents request and acting like she was thrilled to be there. Never the case, it seemed, but she at least had to fake it for the crowds. If they believed it, that was all her parents cared about.
Awkwardly standing there, Addy wasn't sure what else she was supposed to say. Conversation was never something easy for the girl, even with someone that she considered to be something of a friend. Well, at least, as close to being a friend as Addy ever really got. "Are uh, are you excited about graduation coming up?" Addy asked, looking over at Danika for a moment. She personally was quite ready to graduate, even though she would be returning to Hogwarts in the fall anyway to continue her education. Even if it wasn't her first choice, she'd rather have more time there and away from her parents if at all possible. It was the only place that she could be somewhat away from their grasps for any length of time and she wasn't ready to give that slight bit of freedom up just yet.

Her eyes brightened and a genuine smile appeared on her face when Addy mentioned graduation. This was one of the rare times where Danika couldn’t mask her emotions. “I am! I can’t wait,” she said quietly, but there was excitement in her voice. Even though she was returning for Hogwarts for its college program, she was looking forward to becoming an actual adult and she would still have her freedom if everything went according to plan. “Are you going to come back for the college program?” she asked curiously. Danika hoped that her friend would return since she was pretty much the only one she had other than Talan, who didn’t really count.
