Were she not now convinced that the only reason Caelum was going to the ball was because he wanted to ask her, she would have been quite pleasantly surprised to hear that he would be in attendance. Obviously, his going to the ball would mean that her attempts to make the boy more social were working rather well and she was succeeding at being the best best friend possible. "Awhhh, Caelum! That's great! Are you going to dress up all fancy and stuff too?" she asked, now unable to hold back the excited twisting that usually accompanied any good news given to the girl. Were she not physically trying to stop herself from being overzealous in her excitement, she probably would have been bouncing all over the place or halfway across the castle to tell Frankie all about her recent breakthrough with Caelum.
At his next question, however, Aspen got an almost guilty, but childish look. She looked rather as if she had been caught stealing a cookie before dinner or something equally as terrible. Now twisting back and forth slightly slower, Aspen bit at the bottom of her lip for a moment before nodding a bit. "I gueess, yes. Maybe. Is that bad? I'm sorry," she said, talking at a mile a minute. Of course, she much would have preferred if he had asked before realizing that she knew and now that he had caught on to her awareness, she wasn't so sure about what was happening. Now she felt bad for assuming things, hoping that he didn't now feel pressured if that wasn't the case, even if she was pretty sure that it had to be. After all, why else would he have asked her about it? Right? Maybe?

Caelum didn't reply to her question about whether he'd be dressing up 'fancy', he was too busy watching her trying to repress her excitement. She was like a small child at Christmas, waiting to open her presents. In fact Aspen sort of reminded him of his little sister whenever she got excited over something. Caelum couldn't understand how anyone could get so excited over the smallest of things. Really, she looked like she was going to implode.
When Aspen replied to his question he turned his gaze to look back at the tent. He'd been hoping she would have gotten all embarrassed and said no, even if she meant yes. Then he could have feigned ignorance, said that he'd maybe see her at the ball and that would be it. But no she'd said yes, she did want him to ask her, and now he was put into the awkward position of having to say that he couldn't. The fact that he felt bad about upsetting Aspen, was starting to piss Caelum off. Why should he care if he has to turn her down? It wasn't like he'd meant to get her hopes up. In fact, she'd probably just assumed he was going to ask her all on her own. If anything it was Aspens fault for making assumptions.
"I'm going with someone, actually." he said casually and before he could see any sort of hurt on her face, he turned with the intention of heading back up to the castle. He only managed a couple of steps before he cursed under his breath and his shoulders slumped with defeat. He really, really hated Aspen for making him give a shit but he couldn't seem to help himself. Turning on the spot, Caelum pocketed his hands "Maybe I'll save you a dance." Satisfied with this offer, Caelum turned back around and continued his walk up to the school.

Although it might have been logical for Aspen to be slightly disappointed, considering she had just awkwardly been told that Caelum wasn't actually intending to go to the ball with her, she wasn't. In fact, his answer probably made her more excited than she would have been if he actually had asked her to the ball. Obviously, he had gone out of his way to ask someone, which meant that he was much more outgoing than before, which obviously meant that Aspen was winning in her quest to get Caelum to like being around people and such. For a moment, a rather shocked look passed over her face as he turned to leave, but by the time he had turned back around it was a full on grin of excitement.
She was still unable to talk, considering she was bubbling over with excitement at the time, so she simply nodded eagerly hen he offered to save her a dance. That would nice. Aspen liked to dance and she was actually pretty good at it, so that would be fun. Caelum was her best friend forever, after all. As he turned to head back to the castle, Aspen let out a huge squeal of excitement and bounded over to where he was walking to tackle him into a hug. "CAELUUUM!! Why didn't you tell me that?! That's the most exciting news ever and you have to tell me everything about her and then we can go outfit shopping and I can help you get ready and it'll be the best fun ever, ever," Aspen babbled, most of what she was saying coming out in a jumbled mess of words. Clearly, this was too exciting of a moment to just be calm.
